Urban Youth Inspire Low-carbon Lifestyles in Bogota

Developing, launching and tracking targeted low-carbon lifestyle initiatives as envisioned by the youth

Download Summary

Colombia’s middle class is on the rise. But an increase in the standard of living raises new challenges, including increased consumerism, pollution, and carbon emissions. Although every citizen has ample opportunities to live more sustainably, most do not know where to start.

To help, this project engaged with Bogotá’s vibrant young population to show them how making even small changes can have a big impact. Through a combination of entertaining live events, digital media, mobile apps, educational sessions, and social media, participants were challenged to, for example, eat less meat, bike to work, and recycle.

The approach worked. By the end of the project, 95 % of participants said they were more aware of how their actions impact the environment. As a result, many have adopted such sustainable lifestyle practices as using alternative forms of transportation, eating less meat, and reducing energy use at home.

Through the successful campaign and the youth’s participation the project was able to collect evidenced based inputs for Sustainable Lifestyles policy making, which was used in formulating a replicable, illustrated, urban model for similar work regionally/globally.
