With an urbanisation rate of up to 90 %, Da Nang is one of Vietnam’s fastest-growing cities. But with this growth comes an increase in water demand – an increase that the city’s old water supply system simply cannot meet. Although many residents are well-aware of the problem, they’re not sure what they can do about it.
Against this backdrop, this project set out to promote water-smart living among Da Nang households. Through participatory research, demonstrations, education, and training, it provided local residents with the knowledge and tools they need to save water. The project also worked with the local government and water utility company to implement policies that support its water-saving initiatives.
Although only just a first step towards creating a water-smart city, the project believes its initiatives can reduce daily household water use by up to 15 %.
