The South African Plastics Pact

Reducing the use and impact of plastics

Download Summary

Building on the success of the UK Plastics Pact, the South African Plastics Pact hopes to transform the plastics packaging sector into a circular plastics system. In doing so, it will keep plastics in the economy and out of the environment.

With a focus on reducing unnecessary product packaging and increasing recyclability, the pact is working with businesses in South Africa to extend producer responsibility.  The pact also maintains dialogues with the South African government and weighs in on packing policies. Separate initiatives are dedicated to inducing more reuse options and improving conditions in the informal waste sector. The ultimate goal is to reduce the impact of plastics and help citizens live a low carbon lifestyle.
