Food For Us: Reducing Food Waste Through a Mobile App

Food waste reduction through collaborative learning among farmers and consumers

Download Summary

With over 13 million South Africans regularly experiencing hunger, the country cannot afford to let food go to waste. Yet this is what happens to an estimated one-third of the food produced in the country every year.

To close this gap between hunger and food surplus, it is vital to find ways to reduce farm and shop food waste, and make food produce accessible to all.  To help, the Food for Us project conducted several successful awareness-raising initiatives, including a workshop that brought 50 different stakeholders together to discuss strategies for creating a more sustainable food system in South Africa.

The project also developed a mobile application, Food for Us, designed to reduce on-farm food surplus by linking sellers with buyers. The Department of Trade and Industry is currently considering launching the app across the country
