Better by Design

Replicating promising practices, tools and methodologies to enable companies in Peru, Nicaragua and the Honduras to improve sustainability of their food and beverage products

Download Summary

As much as 80 % of a product’s environmental impact is determined at the design stage. That is why this project developed tools that companies can use to embed sustainable, low carbon thinking into their product development, distribution, and promotion initiatives.

The project collaborated with several companies in Peru, Nicaragua, and Honduras to improve product and packaging design. For example, a company in Peru used the project’s ‘Better by Design’ tools to develop new environmentally friendly packaging for its granola bars. Likewise, the project helped a company in Central America investigate using sustainable packaging for its range of cleaning products.

In addition to these corporate-level initiatives, the project introduced effective means for communicating a product’s sustainability information. It also helped the Peruvian government issued a law limiting single-use plastics – effectively requiring companies to adopt sustainable product design.
