Energising Rural Communities with Solar Power

Low-carbon lifestyles in Solak, Aygavan, and Malishka, Armenia

Download Summary

What Armenia may be lacking in fossil fuels, it more than makes up for in sunny days. With an average of 2 500 hours of sun a year, the country has a huge opportunity for solar energy.

To help Armenia’s rural communities better leverage its solar potential, this project promoted practical, everyday uses of renewable energy and energy efficiency in three villages. It did this by introducing solar-operated fruit dryers, water heaters, and streetlights and by providing training on how to use these simple yet efficient solar solutions.

As a result of these initiatives, over 70 % of the population from the participating villages is now keenly aware of how solar energy can help power rural development. Perhaps more importantly, they are enthusiastic about using local resources as a sustainable means of improving their health, well-being, and standard of living.
